Shree Mahaganpati Ranjangaon Ganpati Temple

About Shree Mahaganpati Ranjangaon Ganpati Temple

Shree Mahaganpati Ranjangaon is one of the eight temples in the Ashtavinayak Yatra, which celebrates the different stories of Lord Ganesha. The idol in this temple was donated by the Khollam family, a goldsmith family from Ranjangaon. The temple was built between the 9th and 10th century. The main temple looks like it was built during the Peshwa rule. There is a Nagarkhana (a small room for music) above the entrance gate. The temple faces east and has a big and beautiful main entrance.

Madhavrao Peshwa made a room in the basement of the temple to keep the idol of Lord Ganesha. Later, Sardar Kibe from Indore renovated this temple. The idol here is also known as ‘Mahotkat’ Ganesha. It is said that this idol has ten trunks and twenty hands.

Ranjangaon is also believed to be the place where Lord Shiva worshipped Lord Ganesha before destroying the demon Tripurasur. The temple is near the centre of Ranjangaon village. This temple was built by Sardar Kine during the Peshwa rule. Peshwa Madhavrao built the Garbhagriha (inner room) where the self-formed idol is kept.

The temple is built in such a way that during Dakshinayan (when the sun appears to move south), the sun rays fall directly on the idol. There are statues of Riddhi and Siddhi on both sides of the idol. Two statues of Jay and Vijay guard the main gate.
