River Rafting in Rishikesh suspended

Rishikesh: Adventure tourism in Rishikesh has taken a hit as river rafting has been suspended from June 24 due to the rise in the Ganga’s water level following intense rainfall in Uttarakhand’s upper reaches. Authorities have declared a temporary halt until further notice to ensure the safety of tourists and rafting operators.

The decision was confirmed by Jaspal Chauhan, Secretary of the Ganga River Rafting Management Committee and Adventure Tourism Officer, who stated that all major rafting pointsKaudiyala, Marine Drive, Shivpuri, Club House, and Brahmapuri—are now closed. “Rafting has been completely stopped from June 24 in view of the rising water level of the Ganga. Any violation of this order will invite strict action.

Water Level Nearing Danger Mark

As per the Central Water Commission, the Ganga’s level touched 338.00 meters at noon on Tuesday—just 1.5 meters below the official warning level. The river is now flowing dangerously close to Swargashram, Laxman Jhula, Tapovan, Triveni Ghat, and Muni Ki Reti. Disaster management teams and water police are actively monitoring all ghats to avoid mishaps.

Rafting Season Ends Early This Year

Typically, Rishikesh’s rafting season runs from September 1 to June 30, with a planned monsoon break in July and August. However, this year’s early and heavy rainfall has forced a shutdown a week earlier than usual. The swift action by officials is being seen as a precautionary step amidst unpredictable weather.

Tourism Industry Feels the Pinch

This sudden suspension has affected hundreds of local rafting operators and left thousands of tourists disappointed. “We had bookings till the end of the month,” said a local operator from Shivpuri. “Many visitors are now heading back without enjoying the adventure they came for.”

Visitors Advised to Stay Away from Riverbanks

Officials have urged people to stay away from riverbanks, follow safety advisories, and avoid any kind of water activity during this period. The resumption of rafting will depend on the stabilization of the river flow and clearance from technical inspection teams.
