Celebrate Goa’s most joyful festival — Chikhal Kalo — from July 5 to 7, 2025, at the Devki Krishna Temple in Marcel. This lively monsoon tradition brings people of all ages together for a unique mix of devotion, fun, and muddy games, all inspired by the playful spirit of Lord Krishna.
A Festival That Connects People with Nature
Marcel is a peaceful village in Goa, surrounded by greenery and quiet countryside views. Every year, it becomes the center of celebration for Chikhal Kalo, which means “playing in the mud.” This event is not just about fun — it’s a way to honor Goa’s farming roots and its deep respect for nature.
Held on the 11th or 12th day of Ashadh (a month in the Hindu calendar), the festival is organized on the grounds of the Devki Krishna Temple. As the rains arrive, the temple yard fills with soft, wet mud — turning into a joyful playground for all who take part.
What Makes Chikhal Kalo Special
Chikhal Kalo is a rare festival that blends culture, religion, and tradition in a very natural and enjoyable way. Inspired by stories from the young life of Lord Krishna, who loved to play outdoors and enjoy simple village life, the event brings those stories to life.
It’s also a way for people to give thanks to the Earth — especially in Goa, where farming is a big part of life. This joyful mud celebration helps everyone feel closer to the land and to each other.
What Happens at the Festival
Morning Rituals
The day starts early with prayers and devotional music inside the temple. Instruments like the ghumot, shamel, and taal create a festive mood.
Mud Games
After the rituals, the real fun begins. The temple courtyard becomes a soft mud field where people play traditional games like:
- Chendu Fali – a local ball game
- Gilli Danda – an old village sport with sticks
- Khushti – friendly wrestling matches in the mud
Everyone joins in — from children to elders — slipping, sliding, and laughing together.
Dahi Handi
A big part of the festival is Dahi Handi. People form human pyramids to reach and break a clay pot hanging above the mud — just like Lord Krishna did with pots of butter. It’s a fun challenge that shows teamwork and joy.
Traditional Treats and Sweets
During the festival, sweets like laddoos, puran poli, and bananas are shared. Some are even thrown into the crowd from a platform, adding to the excitement.
Music, Dance, and Culture
Throughout the day, local groups perform folk dances, sing traditional songs, and share stories. These cultural performances help keep Goa’s heritage alive and are a treat to watch.
A Strong Sense of Community
More than anything, Chikhal Kalo is about people coming together. It’s a day where the whole village celebrates as one — welcoming visitors with warmth and joy.
