India Gate is more than just a monument. India Gate was built by the British government as a tribute to the 80,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives during World War I (1914–1918) and the Third Anglo-Afghan War in 1919. The foundation stone of India Gate was laid by the Duke of Connaught on February 10, 1921.
The construction of India Gate took ten years to complete, and it was officially inaugurated by Viceroy Lord Irwin on February 12, 1931.
Near India Gate stands the Amar Jawan Jyoti, which was inaugurated by India’s first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, on January 26, 1972.
