History of Jagdish Temple
The temple was built in 1651 AD by Maharana Jagat Singh, the ruler of Mewar. At that time, Udaipur was the capital of Mewar. It is said that nearly 15 lakh rupees were spent on its construction, which was a huge amount in those days.
During Mughal rule, the temple was attacked under Aurangzeb and got damaged, but later Maharana Sangram Singh II repaired it. Even today you can see how strong and detailed its construction is.
About Jagdish Mandir Udaipur
Jagdish Temple is built in the traditional Indo-Aryan, also called Maru-Gurjara style of architecture. To reach inside the temple you have to climb 32 steps. the temple is 79 feet tall and can be seen from far away in the city. The main attraction here is the beautiful black stone idol of Lord Vishnu, which looks divine and powerful.
At the entrance, two huge stone elephants welcome every visitor. As you step inside, the pillars and walls immediately catch your attention with their detailed carvings of dancers, musicians, and mythological figures. Almost every pillar has tiny carvings that feel like they are telling stories from the past, and this is what makes the temple so unique. Apart from Lord Vishnu, the temple also has shrines of Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati, and Surya Dev, the Sun God. Just before the sanctum, you will also see a bronze statue of Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu, standing guard with folded hands.
