Shree Girijatmaj Ganpati Temple is the sixth temple in the Ashtavinayak Yatra. It is located in Lenyadri. This Ganpati temple is built inside a cave on a hill. The temple is 110 km from Pune and 155 km from Mumbai.

This temple is inside the eighth cave out of 18 Buddhist caves on the hill. These caves are also called “Buddha Leni.” The temple is made by cutting the stone, and it does not have any electric lights inside. Sunlight comes in naturally during the day.

According to the story, Mata Parvati did tapasya (meditation) here for 12 years to get a child. Then Lord Ganesh was born as her son. That is why this Ganpati is called “Girijatmaj” – ‘Girija’ means Mata Parvati and ‘Atmaj’ means son.

There are about 28 to 30 caves on this hill. The caves are very old, from the 2nd century. Many Buddhist monks used to meditate here.

Parking Facilities Near Temple

There is a private parking area near the temple. You have to pay charges for parking. From the parking area, you have to climb 300 to 350 steps to reach the temple.

If someone cannot climb the steps, there is a palanquin (doli) service. The cost of doli is around ₹1500 per person for going up and coming down.

How to Reach Shree Girijatmaj Lenyadri Ganpati Temple

You can come by bike, car, or bus. If you come by bus, take a bus from Pune or Mumbai to Narayangaon or Junnar. From there, you can get a shared vehicle or another bus to Lenyadri.

The temple is on a hill. After parking your vehicle, you need to climb steps to reach the top. You can rest on the way if you feel tired. Bring water with you, but keep bottles hidden because monkeys might snatch them.
